The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated about 180,000 dollars’ worth of medical equipment, supplies, and renovations to the neonatal building of the Jason Sendwe Hospital in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo in February 2023. This hospital is managed by the University of Lubumbashi and is the largest in Katanga Province.

The Church’s donation included the following items among many others: two anesthesia machines, an x-ray machine, electrocardiogram, aspirator, vacuum, respirator, endoscope, monitors, refrigerator, surgical supplies, and a large variety of surgical tools, instruments, and medication for newborns.  The Church also funded the refurbishment of ceilings, replacement of windows and door glass, and repainting of walls.

Joseph Sambi Bulanda, Minister of Health in Haut Katanga Province, attended the handover ceremony on 2 February. He said, “in the name of the Governor of the Province of Haut Katanga, we thank the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its noble support of the vision of our country’s president for better health for all. We ask the medical profession to take good care of these valuable donated supplies and equipment. We invite the Church to continue helping and supporting our community to save the lives of mothers and their children.”

The Church was represented by Elder Pungwe Kongolo, Central Africa Area Seventy who is a physician. He explained, “this large project demonstrates our love for our neighbors. The Church tries its best to provide humanitarian aid when possible, by following in Jesus Christ’s footsteps.”
