The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated over $150,000 USD for extensive renovations of the Institut Technique Social (ITS) in the Ngiri-Ngiri district of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The improvements included extensive repairs of 16 classrooms, 13 latrines, 11 offices, and an administration room. The Church also donated 400 new student desks.

These renovations will eliminate overcrowding and improve the learning conditions of approximately 1500 students at the technical secondary school. Students include both members and non-members of the Church.

The Honorable Henriette Wamu, Member of Parliament from Kinshasa’s Funa District, presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony on November 17, 2023. She was joined by local government officials, local leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leaders of other faiths, and students.

Ms. Wamu said, “We thank The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Mr. Didier Mutombo, the Church’s Director of Humanitarian Affairs in DRC, and Mr. Philip Moatlhodi, the Church’s Director of Humanitarian Affairs in central Africa. This support from the Church fits in with our government’s vision of prioritizing public education.”

Rony Luyatu, second counselor in the Kinshasa Stake Presidency, said, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints follows the example of the Savior Jesus Christ who went about doing good. It is the same motivation that drives our members and Church leaders today.”

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints strive to follow the teachings of the Savior Jesus Christ to care for the needy and to invest in education. They do this without regard to nationality, race, or religion.
