In an awe-inspiring display of musical prowess, the St. Cecilia national music celebration concluded with a resounding victory for Kwekwe Deanery who scooped the first position. The musical extravaganza which was held on 25 November 2023 in the popular Gato raMuzondo amphitheatre situated at Gokomere Mission in Masvingo Diocese, witnessed a record-breaking attendance, surpassing the venue’s capacity with over 15,000 enthusiastic choristers and spectators.

Despite the scorching heat, Catholics from all walks of life gathered with unwavering dedication to be part of this extraordinary celebration. The event was graced by Bishops Raphael Ncube, Raymond Mupandasekwa, and Rudolph Nyandoro, accompanied by a multitude of priests and religious men and women.

As expected, the competition was fiercely contested, with choirs delivering exceptional performances that left the audience mesmerized. Emerging as the ultimate champions, Kwekwe Deanery, led by the remarkable Julia Dirwai, finally claimed the coveted top position after years of striving for greatness. The triumphant moment was further amplified when Julie was announced as the best choir conductor, solidifying her place as an outstanding talent in the field of music.

Defending champions, South West Deanery Harare, relinquished their title but still showcased their incredible ability by securing the fourth position. Outer City Harare and Bikita Deanery held nothing back, displaying an astounding level of musical ingenuity that tied them for the second position. Rumbidzai Makova and Thomas Chimbangu asserted their exceptional conducting talents, leaving the audience in awe of their mastery.

Chirumhanzu Deanery encountered a slight hiccup with a seemingly uncontrollable modulation of the key during their set piece song. However, Liberty Madzima and his dedicated singers quickly regained ground with a remarkable performance of their own choice song, securing them the fifth position.

Inner City’s flawless rendition captivated the hearts of spectators, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure them a position higher than sixth in the eyes of the judging panel. Nonetheless, their fluidity shone brightly throughout the performance earning them a well-deserved place among the top competitors.

Chitungwiza Deanery thrilled the crowd with a stunning performance that landed them in seventh place. Tinotenda Muranganwa and his choir members proved themselves to be equal to the task, leaving a lasting impression on all who were present.

The versatility of maestro drummer Aaron Chidhanguro surprised many as he skilfully took charge of the Gokomere choir, leading them to an impressive eighth position. His ability to transition from playing the bass drum to conducting showcased true artistry in the young man.

North East Deanery Harare also made their mark by delivering an astounding showcase that secured them ninth place. Their musical talent and dedication stood out among the highly competitive field.

The top ten positions were filled with an exceptional display of talent, as three choirs, Beitbridge, Rusape Deanery, and Northwest Harare, showcased their prowess and earned a triple tie position at the tenth spot.

The 2023 St. Cecilia national music celebration truly exemplified the passion and dedication of the music loving community, with an impressive line-up of thirty-seven (37) choirs representing all the eight Dioceses in Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe- South Africa Catholic community choir.

The success of this event is a testament to the power of music to unite, inspire, and uplift people’s faith and spiritual life. Congratulations to Kwekwe Deanery for their outstanding accomplishment, and kudos to all the participating choirs, conductors, and organizers for creating an unforgettable celebration of music and talent.
